However I can foresee cases in which Adobe would be the go-to solution, if the color fringing were the same color as the subject. I did run both through the Camera Raw filter and they both cleaned up well, so while Adobe is better uncorrected, with a bit of work Photomatix can equal the result. In the window on there right there was heavy color fringing in the Photomatix result and only moderate color fringing in Adobe's image.
In the frame I used, there were different alignment problems and if you look closely you will see that Adobe did a better job in some areas and Photomatix did better in others.Ĭhromatic Aberration correction: Adobe won this one. It is the equal of Photomatix, and in some cases even a bit better. This alone blows Adobe out of the water for serious HDR practitioners.Īlignment: Adobe is impressive here. Photomatix's selective deghosting allows an unlimited number of selections, and each can have a different base frame. Both lose dynamic range as deghosting strength is increased.

Both Photomatix's automatic deghosting and Adobe's version perform full frame deghosting, but Photomatix allows one to set the base frame, whereas Adobe does not. Speed: I did not time them, but they seemed about equal.ĭeghosting: I did not test Adobe's deghosting, but it is obvious that it cannot hold a candle to Photomatix's selective deghosting in terms of flexibility. I pitted the new HDR function in LR/ACR against Photomatix, using a very problematic image, shot handheld inside an abandoned house, total of 9EV in 2 EV steps. hdr files from Photomatix in other programs, notably the develop module in LR or ACR (they are the same). At present I am using mostly Photomatix (the new algorithm "Contrast Optimizer") and SNS sometimes mapping. I have owned or tried just about all the HDR programs out there, including Photomatix, SNS, Oloneo, Artizen, HDRPro, Nik HDR Efex, Fusion 3 and a couple of others. As background I have been doing HDR for about a decade, and have had a number of exhibitions of HDR prints. Having just upgraded CC, and having seen a discussion of the new HDR feature in ACR and Lightroom, I decided to give it a try.
